In 2002, two designers named Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez founded Proenza Schouler in New York. The creative pair met in design school and eventually collaborated on their senior thesis. This school project became their first Proenza Schouler collection, named after both of their mother’s maiden names. The entire first PS collection was purchased by Barneys New York.
Proenza Schouler handbag style inspiration
Since that time, Proenza Schouler bags have added a burst of excitement to American fashion. Fresh styles, quality craftsmanship, great detail and easy wear make this brand very popular with blossoming trendsetters. The eclectic design inspiration comes from youth culture and modern art, along with custom made fabrics and an emphasis on tailoring.
PS has received several prestigious fashion awards
In 2004, PS was awarded the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund award, already recognized as a leading industry talent. The company has also won the 2003 Swarovski award for Ready Wear, it is a three-time winner of the Womenswear Designer of the year award, and the 2009 Accessory Designer of the Year award.
The PS1 Classic Satchel
The first Proenza Schouler handbag collection was launched in 2008. This batch included the famous PS1 satchel. This classic bag has become the PS signature piece. The founders wanted to create a lasting style, not just another passing fad. PS1 had a low-key design and no logo. In an attempt to keep the bag from being attached to one particular season, it wasn’t shown on the runway. This new collection was kept under the radar.
The first PS1 Satchel
The first prototype of PS1 was produced in collaboration with skilled Italian craftsmen. At the final stages, McCollough and Hernandez quietly selected a number of close female friends to wear the handbags out on the town. If anyone asked the testers about the bags, they just claimed to have stumbled upon them at a vintage store.
PS1: A big hit with fashion bloggers
In 2010, the PS1 satchel bag was discovered amongst bloggers and was widely distributed across blogs and various social media platforms. The bag became an overnight sensation and a highly sought-after fashion accessory. Today, the PS1 satchel is the Proenza Schouler signature design. Now, there are more size choices from “pochette” all the way up to extra-large, a wide range of colors and versions are available, including a PS1 iPad case, wallet, purse, tote bag and more. Whichever style you choose, a Proenza Schouler bag will surely add youthful energy and pizzazz to your look.
